Product Description
ASTM A358 Class 1 904L Large Diameter Welded Pipe for Chemical Processing

Large diameter piping in chemical plants demands seamless-level integrity at welded-pipe economics. ASTM A358 Class 1 904L welded pipes achieve this through the most rigorous manufacturing and inspection protocol in the industry: 100% radiographic testing of all weld seams, full post-weld solution annealing, and comprehensive NDE on every finished pipe. For chemical processing facilities handling mixed acids, chlorinated solvents, and high-temperature corrosive media, these large diameter 904L pipes provide the ideal balance of performance, availability, and total installed cost.

ASTM A358 Classification & Quality Levels

ASTM A358 defines five classes of welded pipe, with Class 1 representing the highest quality level. The Class 1 designation requires: (1) all longitudinal and circumferential welds to be 100% radiographed after post-weld heat treatment, (2) all welds to be fully penetrated and fusion-welded from both sides or equivalent, and (3) full solution annealing of the finished pipe at 1070-1150°C followed by water quenching. This effectively eliminates the heat-affected zone (HAZ) corrosion susceptibility that concerns engineers when specifying welded pipe for aggressive chemical service. The result is a product with corrosion resistance equivalent to seamless 904L pipe throughout the entire pipe body, including the weld zone.

Fabrication Process for Large Diameter Pipe

Production begins with 904L plate or coil stock verified by PMI and ultrasonic testing for lamination defects. The plate is edge-prepared by precision machining to ensure parallel weld bevels, then formed into a cylindrical shape on a hydraulic press brake or three-roll bender depending on diameter. The longitudinal seam is welded using TIG plasma for the root pass to achieve 100% penetration, followed by submerged arc welding (SAW) for fill and cap passes. After welding, the pipe undergoes full solution annealing in a car-bottom furnace with controlled heating rate, soak time, and rapid water quenching. The final production step is calibration (sizing) to achieve roundness within ±1% of nominal diameter.

Chemical Processing Applications
  • Acid Regeneration Plants (ARP): 904L large diameter pipes handle hot hydrochloric and sulfuric acid streams in spent acid recovery systems for steel pickling lines.
  • Pulp & Paper Mill Digesters: Corrosion-resistant piping for kraft process liquor circulation, where alkaline sulfide and high temperatures demand superior alloy performance.
  • Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD): Absorber recirculation piping and slurry transport lines in coal-fired power plant scrubbers, where acidic condensate and abrasive limestone slurry challenge lesser alloys.
  • Chemical Distribution Headers: Large-bore interconnecting piping between storage tanks, reactors, and distillation columns in multi-product chemical plants.
Project-Specific Quality Documentation

Every shipment includes a comprehensive EN 10204 3.1 material test certificate, radiographic film reports (digital upon request), PMI verification records for base metal and weld metal, solution annealing furnace charts with time-temperature data, and hydrostatic test certificates. For projects requiring third-party inspection, we coordinate seamlessly with SGS, Bureau Veritas, TUV, Lloyd's Register, and ABS surveyors from mill witness testing through final dispatch.
