Product Description

Inconel 718 is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-chromium superalloy that delivers exceptional strength from -423°F (-253°C) up to 1300°F (700°C). Its unique combination of high tensile strength, fatigue resistance, creep rupture properties, and excellent weldability sets it apart from other high-strength superalloys.

Unlike many precipitation-hardened alloys that are prone to post-weld cracking, Inconel 718 exhibits outstanding weldability – even in complex, thin-walled fabrications. This makes it the #1 choice for aerospace gas turbine engines, liquid-fueled rockets, high-temperature fasteners, and critical oil & gas downhole components.

Chemical Composition

The unique age-hardenable characteristics come from a precise balance of niobium (columbium), titanium, and aluminum, which form strengthening precipitates (gamma double-prime and gamma prime) during heat treatment.

Element Content (%) Role
Nickel (Ni) 50.0 – 55.0 Base element – provides corrosion resistance & austenitic stability
Chromium (Cr) 17.0 – 21.0 Oxidation resistance & protection against sulfur compounds
Iron (Fe) Balance (Rem) Provides cost-effective stability & structural integrity
Niobium + Tantalum (Nb+Ta) 4.75 – 5.50 Primary strengthening element (gamma double-prime precipitate)
Molybdenum (Mo) 2.80 – 3.30 Pitting resistance & solid-solution strengthening
Titanium (Ti) 0.65 – 1.15 Secondary strengthener (gamma prime precipitate)
Aluminum (Al) 0.20 – 0.80 Secondary strengthener (gamma prime precipitate)
Cobalt (Co) 1.00 max Limited for nuclear compatibility
Carbon (C) 0.08 max Controlled for carbide stability
Manganese (Mn) 0.35 max Trace element
Silicon (Si) 0.35 max Trace element
Phosphorus (P) 0.015 max Controlled for ductility
Sulfur (S) 0.015 max Controlled for hot workability
Boron (B) 0.006 max Grain boundary strengthener
Copper (Cu) 0.30 max Trace element

Niobium is also referred to as Columbium (Cb) in older specifications. The combined Nb+Ta content is critical for precipitation hardening.

Typical Mechanical Properties

Inconel 718 is supplied in two main conditions: Solution Annealed (for fabrication) and Aged (precipitation-hardened for maximum strength). The aged condition delivers the alloy's signature high-temperature performance.

Product Form Condition Tensile Strength (KSI / MPa) Yield Strength 0.2% Offset (KSI / MPa) Elongation (%) Hardness
Sheet (AMS 5596) Solution Annealed 140 KSI (965 MPa) 80 KSI (552 MPa) 30 102 HRB max
Sheet (AMS 5596) Aged 180 KSI (1241 MPa) 150 KSI (1034 MPa) 12 ≥36 HRC
Sheet (AMS 5597) Solution Annealed 140 KSI (965 MPa) 75 KSI (517 MPa) 30 ≤25 HRC
Sheet (AMS 5597) Aged 180 KSI (1241 MPa) 150 KSI (1034 MPa) 15 ≥38 HRC
Bar / Rod (ASTM B637) Solution Annealed + Aged 185 KSI min (1276 MPa) 150 KSI min (1034 MPa) 12 min 36 HRC min

Key Performance Notes:

  • At 1200°F (649°C): Retains approximately 70% of room temperature yield strength.

  • Creep Rupture: Excellent resistance to creep deformation up to 1300°F (700°C).

  • Fatigue Strength: Superior to most other superalloys in the high-cycle fatigue regime.

  • Cryogenic Performance: Elongation can exceed 20% at -320°F (-196°C) with no ductile-to-brittle transition.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: What is the difference between Inconel 625 and Inconel 718?
A: Inconel 625 is solid-solution strengthened – high strength as-welded, excellent corrosion resistance, but lower high-temperature strength than 718. Inconel 718 is precipitation-hardened – significantly higher yield and creep strength up to 1300°F (700°C), but requires aging heat treatment. For aerospace rotating parts and high-temperature fasteners, choose 718. For seawater and chemical processing, choose 625.

Q: Can Inconel 718 be welded in the aged condition?
A: Typically, 718 is welded in the solution annealed condition (Condition A) and then aged after welding to restore full strength. However, it can also be welded in the aged condition with proper procedures (specifically for repair). Contact us for weld procedure development support.

Q: What heat treatment conditions are available?
A: We supply:

  • Solution Annealed (Condition A): Ready for fabrication.

  • Solution Annealed + Aged (Condition B): Fully precipitation-hardened, maximum strength.

  • Solution Annealed + Double Aged: Optimized for certain stress-rupture requirements (per AMS 5663/5664).

Q: Do you provide third-party inspection?
A: Yes. We can arrange SGS, TÜV, BV, or Lloyd's inspection at the buyer's cost, including witness testing and dimension checks.

Q: What is the maximum temperature for continuous service?
A: For load-bearing applications, continuous service to 1300°F (700°C). For intermittent service, excursions to 1400°F (760°C) are
