Fabrication Guidelines
Process Recommendation
Welding Use matching filler metal (2509). Strictly control heat input (0.5-2.0 kJ/mm). Maintain interpass temperature below 150°C.
Bending Minimum bend radius of 4x OD for cold bending. Use mandrel for tight radii. Hot bending requires solution annealing afterward.
Cutting Use abrasive saw or cold saw. Do not use thermal cutting.
Machining More difficult than austenitic grades. Use rigid setups, positive rake angles, and lower cutting speeds.
Heat Treatment Solution anneal at 1070-1120°C followed by water quenching. Do not stress relieve.
Forming Requires higher force than austenitic grades due to higher strength. Springback is significant.
Limitations and Precautions
Consideration Details
Maximum Operating Temperature 300°C (572°F) – prolonged exposure above this can cause embrittlement
Minimum Operating Temperature -50°C (-58°F) – adequate toughness down to this range
Hydrogen Embrittlement Not suitable for high pressure hydrogen service
Welding Criticality Requires skilled welders and strict procedure control
Lead Time Longer than standard grades due to specialized manufacturing
