Product Description
UNS N08904 904L Super Austenitic Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe - ASTM A312

The UNS N08904 904L seamless pipe represents the pinnacle of super austenitic stainless steel engineering for extreme chemical environments. With a molybdenum content of 4.0-5.0%, nickel content exceeding 23%, and copper additions of 1.0-2.0%, this alloy delivers exceptional resistance to sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, and chloride-induced stress corrosion cracking — capabilities that standard 316L and even many duplex grades cannot match.

Material Chemistry & Metallurgical Excellence

The 904L grade (EN 1.4539) is classified as a fully austenitic super stainless steel with low carbon content (≤0.02%), which virtually eliminates intergranular carbide precipitation during welding. The high nickel content stabilizes the austenitic structure, while molybdenum and copper work synergistically to enhance resistance to reducing acids. This metallurgical profile makes 904L seamless pipes the preferred choice for critical chemical processing applications where material failure is not an option.

ElementContent (%)Role in Performance
Chromium (Cr)19.0 - 23.0Forms passive oxide layer, provides baseline corrosion resistance
Nickel (Ni)23.0 - 28.0Stabilizes austenite, enhances resistance to stress corrosion cracking
Molybdenum (Mo)4.0 - 5.0Critical for pitting and crevice corrosion resistance in chloride environments
Copper (Cu)1.0 - 2.0Improves resistance to reducing acids, particularly sulfuric acid
Carbon (C)≤ 0.02Ultra-low carbon prevents sensitization during welding
Manufacturing Process & Quality Assurance

Every 904L seamless pipe is produced through a rigorous hot extrusion or cold pilgering process followed by solution annealing at 1070-1150°C and rapid water quenching. This ensures a fully recrystallized, homogeneous austenitic microstructure free of secondary phases. In-line eddy current testing (ECT) per ASTM E426 and hydrostatic testing per ASTM A999 are performed on 100% of production lengths. Positive Material Identification (PMI) using XRF and OES analyzers verifies grade compliance on every heat.

Service Performance in Sulfuric Acid

Unlike conventional stainless steels that rapidly corrode in sulfuric acid, 904L maintains excellent resistance across a wide concentration and temperature range. Independent laboratory testing confirms corrosion rates below 0.1 mm/year in 10-40% H₂SO₄ at temperatures up to 60°C. This makes 904L seamless pipe the material of choice for acid coolers, heat exchangers, piping systems, and storage tanks in sulfuric acid production and handling facilities worldwide.

Welding & Fabrication

904L seamless pipes can be welded using TIG (GTAW), MIG (GMAW), and SMAW processes with ER 385 or E 385-15 filler metals. The low carbon content eliminates the need for post-weld heat treatment in most cases. For optimal corrosion performance, post-weld pickling and passivation are recommended to restore the passive chromium oxide layer.
