Product Description

A 201 colored stainless steel sheet starts with ASTM A240 201 stainless steel as the base material, then receives a durable color finish through PVD (Physical Vapor Deposition) or electrochemical coloring processes.

Grade 201 is an austenitic chromium-nickel-manganese stainless steel developed as a lower-cost alternative to 304. While it offers slightly lower corrosion resistance than 304, it provides excellent formability and strength for interior applications where extreme corrosion exposure is not a concern.

The color finish — available in gold, bronze, black, rose gold, blue, and more — is bonded at the molecular level. It will not peel, flake, or scratch off under normal use.

Best suited for: Interior decorative applications where budget matters and corrosion exposure is mild to moderate.

Not recommended for: Outdoor use, coastal environments, swimming pools, or high-humidity industrial settings.

Key Features
Feature Benefit
Lower cost than 304 Approximately 15-25% less expensive than 304-based colored sheets
Permanent color bond No peeling, flaking, or scratching off
Good formability Can be bent, stamped, and deep drawn
Wide color range Standard and custom colors available
Multiple finishes No.4 brushed, mirror, hairline, embossed
Lightweight strength High strength-to-weight ratio
201 vs 304 – What's the Difference?

This is the most common question buyers ask. Here is the direct comparison:

Feature 201 Stainless Steel 304 Stainless Steel
Nickel content 3.5 – 5.5% 8.0 – 10.5%
Manganese content 5.5 – 7.5% ≤ 2.0%
Corrosion resistance Good for interior use Excellent for interior and exterior
Cost Lower Higher
Best for Indoor decorative applications Indoor + outdoor, harsh environments
Magnetic? Slightly magnetic after cold working Non-magnetic when annealed

The bottom line: For indoor walls, elevator interiors, kitchen backsplashes, and furniture trim, 201 colored stainless steel sheet is a smart, cost-effective choice. For outdoor facades, coastal areas, or wet environments — spend the extra money on 304 or 316.

Available Colors
Color Common Code Best Application
Titanium Gold Ti Gold Elevator panels, hotel lobbies
Champagne Gold Champagne Residential kitchens, bathrooms
Bronze Bronze Office interiors, wall panels
Dark Bronze Dark Bronze High-end residential trim
Black Black PVD Appliances, commercial kitchens
Rose Gold Rose Gold Retail displays, furniture
Sapphire Blue Blue Decorative accents, art
Emerald Green Green Hospitality, specialty projects

Custom color matching is available with minimum order quantities.

Surface Finishes
Finish Code Appearance Best For
Brushed No.4 Fine satin lines, soft reflection Most architectural applications
Mirror No.8 Highly reflective, bright Decorative panels, showrooms
Hairline HL Very fine, uniform lines Appliances, consumer goods
Embossed Patterned (leather, wood grain) Wall cladding, elevator interiors
Chemical Composition (ASTM A240 201)
Element Weight %
Carbon (C) ≤ 0.15
Manganese (Mn) 5.50 – 7.50
Phosphorus (P) ≤ 0.045
Sulfur (S) ≤ 0.030
Silicon (Si) ≤ 1.00
Chromium (Cr) 16.0 – 18.0
Nickel (Ni) 3.5 – 5.5
Nitrogen (N) ≤ 0.25

UNS Designation: S20100

Note: PVD or electrochemical coloring does not alter the chemical composition of the base material.

Mechanical Properties
Property Requirement
Tensile Strength (min) 515 MPa (75 ksi)
Yield Strength 0.2% Offset (min) 205 MPa (30 ksi)
Elongation (min) 40%
Hardness (Brinell, max) 217 HBW
Hardness (Rockwell B, max) 95 HRB

Values apply to the annealed condition. PVD coating adds surface hardness but does not change bulk mechanical properties.
