Product Description
What Is ASTM A500?

ASTM A500 is the American standard for cold-formed welded and seamless carbon steel structural tubing in round, square, and rectangular shapes. It is the go-to specification for structural applications where strength, weldability, and economy are required.

Square steel tubes under ASTM A500 are produced as cold-formed welded tubes, then heat-treated to remove internal stresses and improve mechanical properties. The standard covers four grades: A, B, C, and D – with Grade B and Grade C being the most commonly used.

Quick Facts Value
Standard ASTM A500
Shape Square
Process Cold-formed + welded + heat treated
Key Feature High strength-to-weight ratio
Primary Use Structural framing, columns, trusses
Common Grades Grade B, Grade C
Chemical Composition

ASTM A500 specifies chemical requirements for each grade. Below are the limits per the standard.

Element Grade A Grade B Grade C Grade D
Carbon (C) ≤ 0.26 ≤ 0.26 ≤ 0.23 ≤ 0.27
Manganese (Mn) ≤ 1.35 ≤ 1.35 ≤ 1.35 ≤ 1.40
Phosphorus (P) ≤ 0.035 ≤ 0.035 ≤ 0.035 ≤ 0.035
Sulfur (S) ≤ 0.035 ≤ 0.035 ≤ 0.035 ≤ 0.035
Copper (Cu) ≥ 0.20 (when specified) ≥ 0.20 (when specified) ≥ 0.20 (when specified) ≥ 0.20 (when specified)

Notes:

  • Grade D has more restrictive carbon equivalent (CE) requirements for improved weldability
  • Copper is required only when the order specifies atmospheric corrosion resistance

Grade Selection Guide:

Grade Strength Level Typical Use
Grade A Lowest Light structural, non-critical applications
Grade B Medium (most common) General structural framing, columns, braces
Grade C Highest Heavy structural, high-load applications
Grade D High + improved weldability Cold-temperature and welded structures
Mechanical Properties

ASTM A500 specifies minimum mechanical properties that vary by grade and tube wall thickness.

Tensile Requirements
Grade Tensile Strength (MPa) Yield Strength (MPa) Elongation (%)
Grade A ≥ 310 ≥ 230 ≥ 25
Grade B ≥ 400 ≥ 315 ≥ 23
Grade C ≥ 425 ≥ 345 ≥ 21
Grade D ≥ 400 ≥ 250 ≥ 23

Elongation requirements apply to 50 mm (2 inches) gauge length. Actual values vary by wall thickness – thinner walls may have lower elongation.

Comparison by Grade
Grade Strength Weldability Cost Best For
B Medium Excellent Low General construction (most popular)
C High Good Medium Heavy structural, high-load frames
D Medium-High Excellent (low CE) Medium Cold-temperature welded structures
A Low Excellent Lowest Light-duty, non-critical
Dimensional Tolerances (ASTM A500)
Parameter Typical Tolerance
Outside dimensions ± 0.5 mm to ± 1.0 mm (size dependent)
Wall thickness ± 10%
Straightness ≤ 1/8" per 5' (≈ 2.0 mm per meter)
Twist ≤ 2° + 0.5° per meter
Corner radius 2× to 3× wall thickness (typical)
Standard Size Range (Square Tube)
Size (mm) Common Wall Thickness (mm)
20 × 20 1.5, 2.0
40 × 40 2.0, 2.5, 3.0
50 × 50 2.5, 3.0, 4.0
80 × 80 3.0, 4.0, 5.0
100 × 100 3.0, 4.0, 5.0, 6.0
150 × 150 4.5, 5.0, 6.0, 8.0
200 × 200 6.0, 8.0, 10.0
