Product Description

Low carbon seamless stainless pipe is a specialized category of austenitic stainless steel pipe with a maximum carbon content of 0.030%, significantly lower than standard grades which contain up to 0.080% carbon. This reduced carbon content provides critical advantages for welded assemblies and applications involving exposure to corrosive media in the as-welded condition.

The primary benefit of low carbon stainless steel is its resistance to sensitization – the precipitation of chromium carbides at grain boundaries during welding or elevated temperature service (425-870°C / 800-1600°F). Sensitization depletes chromium adjacent to the grain boundaries, creating zones susceptible to intergranular corrosion. Low carbon grades virtually eliminate this risk, allowing the material to be welded without post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) and maintaining its corrosion resistance throughout the welded joint.

The seamless manufacturing process ensures uniform wall thickness, consistent mechanical properties, and complete absence of a longitudinal weld seam. This seamless construction provides superior pressure-holding capability and reliability compared to welded pipes, making low-carbon seamless pipes the preferred choice for critical applications in chemical processing, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, power generation, and general industrial service.

The Sensitization Problem – Why Low Carbon Matters
What is Sensitization?

When standard stainless steel (0.080% carbon) is heated to 425-870°C (800-1600°F) – typical welding temperatures – chromium carbides precipitate at grain boundaries. This precipitation removes chromium from the adjacent areas, reducing local chromium content below the 12% threshold needed for corrosion resistance.

Consequences of Sensitization
Issue Description
Intergranular Corrosion (IGC) Corrosion attacks the chromium-depleted grain boundaries, leading to loss of strength
Weld Decay Corrosion occurs in a narrow band adjacent to the weld, often invisible until failure
Knife-Line Attack Corrosion along a narrow line in the heat-affected zone of stabilized grades
Performance Loss Material fails prematurely in service
Why Low Carbon (0.030% max) Solves the Problem
Carbon Content Sensitization Risk Post-Weld Heat Treatment Required?
0.080% (304/316) High Yes (1050°C + quench)
0.030% max (304L/316L) Virtually None No

By reducing the carbon content to 0.030% maximum, there is insufficient carbon available to form harmful chromium carbides during welding. The material can be used in the as-welded condition without any loss of corrosion resistance.
