Product Description

2205 duplex stainless steel pipe is a nitrogen-enhanced duplex grade with a two-phase microstructure consisting of approximately 50% austenite and 50% ferrite. This balanced structure provides approximately twice the yield strength of standard austenitic stainless steels such as 304 and 316, combined with excellent corrosion resistance.

2205 is the most widely used duplex stainless steel grade, offering an exceptional combination of high strength, good weldability, and superior resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and crevice corrosion.

Key Features
  • High Strength – Approximately twice the yield strength of 304/316 stainless steel
  • Excellent Pitting Resistance – PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) of 33-35
  • Stress Corrosion Cracking Resistance – Superior resistance to chloride SCC
  • Good Weldability – Can be welded using standard methods with proper filler metals
  • High Thermal Conductivity – Better heat transfer than austenitic grades
  • Low Thermal Expansion – Similar to carbon steel, reducing thermal stress issues
  • Cost Effective – Allows for wall thickness reduction of 30-50% compared to austenitic grades
Fabrication Guidelines
Process Recommendation
Welding Use matching filler metal (2209). Control heat input (0.5-2.5 kJ/mm). Avoid overheating.
Bending Minimum bend radius of 3x OD for cold bending. Use mandrel for tight radii.
Cutting Use abrasive saw or cold saw. Avoid thermal cutting to prevent intergranular corrosion.
Machining Use rigid tooling and positive rake angles. Lower speeds and higher feeds than austenitic.
Heat Treatment Solution anneal at 1040-1100°C followed by water quenching.
