In stainless steel decorative sheet applications, "original pattern plate" and "embossed plate" are two distinct products often confused by buyers. Despite similar appearance, they differ significantly in manufacturing process, material quality, durability, and application suitability.

Original pattern plates are formed directly during the hot rolling process at the steel mill. The pattern and base material are produced as a single, integrated structure. The pattern is embedded into the steel during the initial manufacturing stage, creating a unified product from the start.
Embossed plates are produced through secondary processing. Patterns are pressed onto standard plain stainless steel sheets using patterned work rolls. The pattern depth is typically only 20 to 30 microns. This is purely a surface treatment applied after the sheet has already been manufactured.
Because the pattern is formed during the steelmaking process, alloying elements such as chromium, molybdenum, and nickel are evenly distributed throughout the material. This ensures consistent corrosion resistance and mechanical strength across the entire sheet, with no weak points introduced during production.
Material quality depends entirely on the base sheet selected for processing. If the base material is substandard or contains impurities, the final product will inherit these deficiencies. Some manufacturers may use lower-grade materials to reduce costs, resulting in inconsistent quality and compromised performance.
The pattern is fully integrated with the base metal, creating a deep and lasting impression. Pattern height typically ranges from 1.2 to 2.0 millimeters. Under heavy friction, repeated loading, or long-term use, the pattern remains sharp and clear without any risk of separation or wear.
The pattern is applied to the surface through mechanical pressing rather than being integrated into the material. Under heavy use, stress, or harsh conditions, the pattern may deform, peel, or even cause the sheet to crack along the pressed areas. The shallow depth also means patterns can wear down more quickly in high-traffic environments.
Because the material retains its full alloy composition throughout the sheet, corrosion resistance is uniformly maintained. There are no weak points or vulnerable areas where rust can initiate.
The pressing process can disrupt the internal structure of the material, particularly along the edges and recesses of the pattern. In humid or chemically aggressive environments, these stressed areas are more susceptible to corrosion. Rust may begin to form in the pattern crevices over time.
Original Pattern Plate is recommended for outdoor applications, industrial platforms, anti-slip flooring, stair treads, heavy-load environments, chemical plants, and food processing facilities. It is also the preferred choice for any project requiring high durability and long service life.
Embossed Plate is best suited for indoor decorative applications such as elevator interiors, building facades, interior wall cladding, furniture panels, ceilings, display stands, and other light-load or cosmetic uses.
When sourcing patterned stainless steel sheets, always verify the manufacturing process. Ask whether the product is steel mill direct rolled or secondary pressed. Request EN 10204 material certificates to confirm origin and quality. Inspect pattern depth, consistency, and integrity. Finally, match your selection to actual working conditions rather than choosing based solely on price.
Original pattern plate and embossed plate represent fundamentally different product categories. The former offers superior material integrity, permanent pattern durability, consistent corrosion resistance, and reliable performance in demanding applications. The latter provides cost flexibility and decorative variety for lighter, indoor uses.
The lowest price rarely delivers the best value. For critical applications involving safety, load-bearing, or long-term outdoor exposure, original pattern plate is the recommended choice.
