Evaluate your service environment – The main advantage of 2205 lies in its performance in high-chloride and stress-corrosion environments. For ordinary atmospheric conditions, 304 or 316 is usually sufficient, so there is no need to pay extra for 2205.

Verify material authenticity – Always ask your supplier to provide a proper material test certificate, and verify that the chromium, nickel, molybdenum, and nitrogen contents meet the required standards. 2205 is a premium-grade material, and there are cases where inferior duplex steels or even ordinary stainless steels are misrepresented as 2205. Consider using a spectrometer or third-party testing for verification.

Distinguish between seamless and welded pipes – Seamless pipes offer better pressure-bearing capacity and are suitable for high-pressure and high-temperature applications. Welded pipes are more cost-effective and offer greater dimensional flexibility, making them suitable for general structural and low-pressure conveying applications. For high-pressure applications, seamless pipes are preferred.

Consider fabrication and welding requirements – The welding process for 2205 requires more careful control than for austenitic stainless steels. Heat input and interpass temperature must be tightly managed to avoid precipitation of harmful phases. If your project involves extensive welding, work with a fabricator experienced in duplex stainless steel welding, and consider whether post-weld heat treatment is necessary.
