Among the many stainless steel grades, 321 stainless steel pipe holds a critical position in industrial applications due to its exceptional high-temperature resistance and corrosion resistance. It is an austenitic stainless steel, roughly equivalent to UNS S32100, containing approximately 17–19% chromium and 9–12% nickel, with titanium added as a stabilizing element. This article explores its key characteristics, advantages, and typical uses.

Core Advantage: The Stabilizing Role of Titanium

321 stainless steel shares similar mechanical properties with 304, but its distinct advantage comes from the addition of titanium (Ti). This alloying element plays a crucial role:

  • Enhanced resistance to intergranular corrosion: During welding or when exposed to high temperatures (427°C–816°C), ordinary stainless steels are prone to chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries, leading to intergranular corrosion. The titanium in 321 preferentially combines with carbon, effectively preventing chromium depletion and significantly improving resistance to this type of attack.

  • Superior high-temperature strength: Titanium also imparts excellent creep resistance and high-temperature stress-rupture strength. In elevated-temperature environments, 321 outperforms both 304L and 316L, offering greater structural stability under sustained thermal stress.

Typical Application Fields

Thanks to these properties, 321 stainless steel pipe is widely used in demanding conditions requiring both heat resistance and corrosion resistance:

  • Petrochemical industry: Commonly found in exhaust gas combustion piping, refinery equipment, heat exchangers, boiler casings, and high-temperature chemical process vessels.

  • Power generation and mechanical equipment: Suitable for engine exhaust manifolds, diesel muffler components, high-temperature furnace parts, and aircraft jet engine components.

  • Pressure vessels and transport pipelines: Used in boiler pressure parts, chemical tankers, and various conveying systems for hot fluids.

Fabrication and Selection Considerations

321 stainless steel offers good weldability and can be joined using common fusion welding and resistance welding methods. However, for service in severe high-temperature conditions, post-weld stabilization heat treatment at 840–900°C is recommended to restore optimum corrosion resistance.

Important note: Although 321 exhibits strong general corrosion resistance, it is not recommended for seawater or environments with high chloride concentrations (e.g., saline solutions), as pitting corrosion may occur in such media.
